Domestic Pavilion, 2019 Wood, metal, stoneware, sticks, rock, plant material, paper and other materials 96 x 96 x 96 inches
Domestic Pavilion is a proposal for an expandable structure dedicated to the investigation of edible plants, plant material and handmade tools. A set of semi translucent curtains allows for multiple ways to divide space within the structure. Objects that are not used can be stored in a cache covered by a metal plate which double functions as a cooking plate. Objects gathered within the structure are either made from local plant material, or from the remnants of industrially made consumer goods, such as tin cans and cardboard containers. The first exhibition of Domestic Pavilion at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery included objects I made inspired by classes I took with the Los Angeles based teacher of selfreliance, Christopher Nyerges. I invited Nyerges to perform a lecture on plants using the pavilion as a support structure. In a second exhibition of the pavilion I displayed additional tools and objects made from pine resin found during a residency in Mammoth Lakes.
