LAMOA Display System #7, 2018 Wood, metal, 77 x 77 x 77 inches
I created LAMOA (Los Angeles Museum of Art) in 2012, as a “platform for an organic institution that lives through par- ticipation.“ Starting out with a small structure that I built in an empty space next to my studio, I organized exhibitions by inviting artist colleagues to present their work according to how it best suited them. The project has been expanding since then to accommodate different kinds of work. Display systems #1 through 8 allowed LAMOA to present exhibitions as a guest within various institutions. The first six display systems were designed to showcase a number of smaller works by different artists while the main LAMOA structure continued its program at my studio and other locations. I created Display System #7 after the program at the original LAMOA had discontinued. Display System #7 is comprised of nine individual, interlocking units that can be arranged to form an exact cube, or remain on their own as individual parts. Here, the display units showcases works by Carmen Argote, Beatriz Cortez, Katie Grinnan, Olga Koumoundouros, Gala Parras-Kim, Jen Smith, and Clarissa Tossin, whom I invited to participate.
